What Our Students Say About Us

    Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about our CAOHC-certified hearing conservation and audiometric testing seminars with answers to our most frequently asked questions.

    L
What is the difference between the certificate of completion that you provide and CAOHC certification?

When you complete our 2-morning Audiometric Testing course, we provide you with a certificate of course completion to show evidence of your training and that you demonstrated to us as audiologists your competence in completing an audiometric test. This is all the OSHA requires and all that is needed for those not engaged in hearing protection or a hearing conservation program, such as clinic and school nurses. The certificate from CAOHC is for completing the full 5-morning course that includes both audiometric testing and hearing conservation content. If you are now sure, you can take our Audiometric Testing course and then come back at a later time to take our 2-morning Hearing Conservation course. Upon passing CAOHC’s exam, you would then receive CAOHC certification.

    What is a CAOHC course?

CAOHC stands for the Council for Accreditation in Hearing Conservation. This 20-hour training program is split into two courses: Audiometric Testing and Hearing Conservation. Some students only need one of these, depending on their goals or job requirements.

    K
    L
Is this the same seminar taught since 1973?

The original course began in 1973 by audiologist Bob Connelly. Dr. Tom Thunder updated and redesigned it in 1996 using his dual expertise in audiology and noise control engineering, ensuring the content remains current and comprehensive.

    K
    L
Is CAOHC certification required for hearing testing?

Not always. While the military, mining industry, certain states, and NIOSH may require CAOHC certification, Federal OSHA does not. However, you must prove your competence to an audiologist in audiometric testing practices. Our seminar covers all these requirements.

    K
    L
Can a CAOHC-certified nurse or technician train others to test hearing?

No. OSHA does not recognize a “train-the-trainer” system. Testers must be either CAOHC certified or trained and assessed for competency in hearing testing.

    K
    L
Can school nurses take this course?

Yes! Many school nurses take our Audiometric Testing course. If working in high schools, some also take the Hearing Conservation course to support students exposed to high-noise environments like band practice or auto shop.

    K
    L
    How are the seminars structured?

Our seminars are fully online and held monthly in the mornings only to enhance learning and reduce burnout. Originally hosted in Schaumburg, IL, we’ve been online since July 2020.

    K
    L
What if I can’t attend both mornings of training back-to-back?

No problem! You can attend the Audiometric Testing course first, and then complete the Hearing Conservation course during the next session.

    K
    L
Is there a test for CAOHC certification?

Yes. To get certified, CAOHC requires you to pass a test. We fully prepare you through:

    End-of-lecture review questions

    An interactive PowerPoint quiz

A live review session before the test

    Online testing format for convenience

    K
    L
What is the CAOHC Refresher Seminar?

Every 5 years, CAOHC-certified individuals must take a 10-hour refresher course. Our Hearing Conservation seminar doubles as the refresher and covers updated topics like:

    Insert earphones and boothless testing

    Custom and hi-fidelity hearing protection

STS follow-up updates and OSHA 300 Log changes

    NHCA baseline revision guidance

Better ways to educate and motivate employees
